Today, those who are tired of basking in the sun in the sea resorts and want to actively explore the world are engaged in hiking or trekking. The concept and word “tracking” by itself is not very popular in Russia. Meanwhile, there is nothing unusual in this word. What it means, what is the beauty of such trip and what parts of our country are better suitable for tracking, we will tell in this material.
Tourists who come to Sochi for outdoor activities often stay at the apart-hotel Brevis, so we know all about the most interesting routes.

How is trekking different from tourism?

In 1949, trekking was included in the all-Union Association of sports as a kind of Hiking. And in 1970 the first competition for the best trekking trip took place.

In English “tracking” is the movement or the transition to mountainous or rugged terrain. In simple terms, it is hiking on a pre-planned route (track), which does not require special training and equipment from the tourist. This is a holiday in motion, the purpose of which is the contemplation of nature, familiarity with local sights.
The main advantage of tracking is accessibility: everyone can do it, from children to pensioners. To go tracking, you don’t need expensive equipment – all you need is a comfortable Hiking clothes, sturdy boots, a backpack and willingness to experience. Each traveler can choose a route of any complexity and move on it with the most convenient time for him.
The purpose of tracking is not to overcome obstacles (although, of course, can not do without them), but getting pleasure from outdoor recreation. Even if you have chosen as a route, for example, the snow-covered trails of Everest, it is enough to have a barely noticeable track on which you are able to pass. There would be a desire. And even children will master the simplest routes.
To sum up: tracking is a completely democratic type of holiday, which does not require high expenses. Put all things together, chose a route, which you will follow, brought the necessary supply of food, a tent and go!

The difficulty of translating.

In English to refer to hiking, in addition to trekking, two more words are used –Hiking and Backpacking. We have already learned what tracking is. Let’s get acquainted with other words, and at the same time find out how they differ from tracking.
Hiking is a short walk for one or two days with light baggage. In Russia, this option is known as a “weekend trip”. Hiking is very popular in Europe, there are many routes where you can walk without packing a backpack with food and tourist equipment. The difference between Hiking and tracking can be shown by simple examples.
First example: you decided to relax on the Oka river. You got to the desired location and spent the whole day on the river, spent the night in a tent and the next day returned home. It’s Hiking.
Second example: you are going to hike in the Altai mountains. You made a route for 5 days, took backpacks, tents and hit the road. It’s tracking. As you probably already understand the trekking is a hike on more complex routes such as the highlands. Common between hiking and trekking is the adherence to strictly defined routes, evade which is impossible.
Another thing is backing. This is what we used to call a hike in our traditional sense – free movement around the area without reference to certain routes, with campfire, overnights stays in the open air and other romantic attributes. In such case you won’t be able to avoid heavy backpacks with equipment and food!
Well, to be honest, travelers often combine different elements of all three types of tourism, and these terms are mainly used by manufacturers of tourist equipment. But now you know about these terms.
